n the 6th of September 2024 the first edition of the conference in a series of conferences organized by The Muntu Institute Foundation dubbed: Public Series Thinking No. 2 was held at the usual venue, “Entreé MAETUR Mimboman ” in Yaounde, Cameroon. The Conference that was titled : “Internally Displaced Persons: Re-configuring and re-appropriation in Cameroon” started at 4pm prompt with two panelists and a moderator on set. Viz, KINANG Derick Fai, a civil society activist with “Defyhate-Cameroon”, Nassou Nassourous, a Political Scientist in the University of Yaounde II and the Moderator, NKODO AKONO Romaric, also a political Scientist in the University of Yaounde II. At exactly 4pm, the moderator took the floor, introduced the panelist, welcomed the participants and dived in to the introduction of the conference. After introducing the conference, he immediately gave the floor to the first panelist in the name of Nassou Nassourous.
The theme of Nassourous’ presentation was; the effects of IDPs within the auspices of the Boko-Haram insurgency in the Far North Region of Cameroon. The aim of his presentation was to show the nexus between the Boko-Haram insurgency and IDPs in the Far North Region of Cameroon. Here he enumerated that, unemployment, poverty and social discrimination are the fundamental causes influencing young Cameroonians to integrate the sect. The main argument in his presentation was that, there is an urgent need to critically address the situation of IDPs in the Far North in spite of the fact that, some are in refugee camps under humanitarian circumstances.
The next panelist of the day was Kinang Derick Fai. As an espert in this domain of research, his presentation was centered on the protection and assistance of IDPs in Cameroon. His analysis was focused on a comparative analysis on the IDPs of the crisis in the North West and South West Regions and those of the Boko-Haram insurgency. He made a striking remark by pointing out that, the IDPs of the Boko-Haram insurgency are well protected holding on the fact that they can be identified in well defined camps. Meanwhile IDPs of the crisis in the North West and South west region cannot be easily identified which makes its very difficult for the allocation of resources for their assistance. To him, the faith of IDPs of the crisis in the Anglophone regions is quite uncertain due to the barbaric nature of the conflict and hatred spread from neighboring regions which are equally victims of that sort.
After the presentations of the panelists, the floor was given to the public for a question and answer session. In line with this, two series of questions were taken constituting 4 questions each. At exactly 6:20pm, the moderator picked up his microphone in which he thanked the public for coming to participate in the great scientific exercise. He equally thanks the organizing committee for making the conference a success, the technical team that was there to ensure that the conference was diffused online. Finally the moderator expressed his gratitude to the Executive Director of The Muntu Institute Foundation for this great initiative to give young scholars the opportunity to express their thoughts on diverse social or societal happenings plaguing the development of the African continent today.
